The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has approved an investment of N242.8 million for the procurement of a Microsoft 365 licence in a strategic move to modernise and digitise the operations of the Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS). The decision, which underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging technology for improved service delivery, was announced following an FCT Executive Committee meeting chaired by Minister Nyesom Wike in Abuja on Wednesday.

Michael Ango, the Acting Executive Chairman of FCT-IRS, explained that this investment is a crucial step in transitioning the agency from manual processes to a fully automated system. He highlighted that adopting Microsoft 365 would enhance internal communication, streamline workflows, and improve overall operational efficiency.

“So, this is also one of those investments in technology that the FCT is undertaking. The licence, if procured, will enhance our ability to move most of our manual processes into automated processes. It will enhance our ability to communicate within our offices,” Ango stated.

The implementation of Microsoft 365 is expected to revolutionise the revenue service by providing a centralised and cloud-based platform for data storage, collaboration, and communication. By reducing dependence on paper-based documentation, the system will not only improve record-keeping but also contribute to environmental sustainability.

Beyond administrative improvements, the digitisation efforts align with the broader goal of enhancing revenue generation in the Federal Capital Territory. A more efficient and technology-driven tax administration system will help curb leakages, increase transparency, and ensure a more seamless tax collection process.

The initiative also reflects a growing trend among government agencies in Nigeria and across the world to integrate digital solutions into public service delivery. Many tax authorities globally have adopted similar platforms to enhance data security, improve compliance, and provide taxpayers with more accessible services.

Under the leadership of Minister Nyesom Wike, the FCT administration has prioritised innovation and efficiency in governance. This latest investment in technology is part of a broader strategy to modernise key government agencies, ensuring that Abuja remains at the forefront of digital transformation in Nigeria.

As governments worldwide move towards automation, the FCT-IRS’s adoption of Microsoft 365 is expected to serve as a model for other government institutions seeking to improve efficiency through technology. The initiative is not just about modernising revenue collection but also about strengthening governance, enhancing service delivery, and creating a more transparent and accountable system.
